adoption || a family update

We last posted about our family in March - here. We are really excited to share with you that the Lord has been rapidly opening doors for us, which seem to be leading to an adoption sometime during the month of May!

Several weeks ago, we were approached by a family friend, who’d heard of a young couple that was choosing to give their baby up for adoption. Our friend felt compelled to share this news with us and give us time to pray & seek the Lord. The information we had to consider was minimal: the baby was most likely exposed to drugs in utero and the birth mom was currently on methadone (and incarcerated), the unmarried parents felt they couldn’t care for the baby & did not want it go into foster care, and the due date was “early May”. As we thought and prayed and sought counsel, the questions we were asking seemed to be our answer. There was no “if this, then we….” – no minimum drug exposure or set of circumstances that, if added up, would equal our interest in this baby. We were only asking how we could care for him/her. We were asking wisdom for the resources (financially, emotionally, practically) to take such a child into our home.

When we expressed our desire to move forward, things began to click into place rapidly. We know there are never any guarantees in such cases, but the Lord has graciously ushered us through numerous doors with absolute confirmation of His presence & pleasure over this process. We contacted an attorney who connected us with a well-respected adoption agency in our area who is willing to expedite our case (given baby’s due date) at no additional cost. Cameron was able to speak directly to the biological father, who welcomed his call & spoke eagerly with him. The biological father expressed gratitude to us, talked about the difficulty of making this decision, and told Cameron the baby is a girl!

As you can imagine, we’re a bit stunned. The good kind! Last month we posted a blog, sharing with you the sadness of our fourth miscarriage. We expressed a desire to see the Lord grow our family through adoption and, though we’d initially selected another agency than the one we’re working with now, we never imagined He would move so quickly. We have been moving ninety-to-nothing these last [barely] three weeks, preparing documents, finalizing homestudy paperwork, and seeking counsel from other adoptive families and from trusted counselors. We are looking at the very real possibility that this time next month, we will have a baby girl!

We’d like to ask you to pray with us, as we celebrate this news. As you may know, adoptions are not finalized until both biological parents have terminated their parental rights and much paperwork has been completed. While we have great confidence in pursuing this, there is always the tiniest thought that something may change. Adoption are also far from inexpensive. Though we have already been able to provide just over 50% of the adoption fees, there is still a great investment to be made. We are asking the Lord for some very specific things during this time and would covet your prayers as well.

See below for how you can be burden-bearers with us, as we wait for God’s best for our family.
